Preparation
The best place to start is with yourself. To do well in an online or correspondence course, there are aspects of your life that must come together. To determine whether or not you are ready for this type of course, we recommend that you complete this Distance Education Success Indicator Quiz.
Class formats vary and may be Term-Based or Non-Term Based; click the linked formats for a more in depth description allowing you to consider the best one for you: Online, Correspondence, or Hybrid.
Please be aware that some courses may have different types of financial aid eligibility and/or rules regarding tuition assistance programs. If there is a specific course that you have a question about, see the University Center Financial Aid Advisor or the University Center Business Office for more information.
Finding Courses/Programs
To find or register for a course, visit WebAdvisor to "Search for Sections" or if you are a current student, you can log-in and follow this path: "Register for Sections" >> "Search and Register." See this Webadvisor Screen Shot example on how to build a search for online classes. To search for correspondence courses, simply change the location to
"CC-Correspondence." To see what programs might be available entirely online, visit the websites of each partner institution (see links to the right).
Taking The Course
Online or Hybrid classes are delivered in the D2L system. You can access the system via this address: https://d2l.sdbor.edu/
This secured-access system is designed to promote learning in and out of the classroom. As student's needs become more varied and more effort being made to adapt teaching styles to learning styles, additional tools are necessary to better handle course material; Desire 2 Learn is that system for all South Dakota Board of Regents schools.
IMPORTANT: To gain access to D2L, students must have access and regular interaction with their HOME school e-mail accounts. If you do not know your HOME school e-mail address and/or how to access, Click Here!
NOTE: If you take a course that is completely delivered via online/correspondence, University Center will NOT have your books/materials; instead you will need to contact the university's bookstore delivering the course to have books/materials delivered to you. See the links to the right.
Be sure to review the Online Learning Tutorial to learn more about how to take online courses and about proper nettiquette.
Proctoring
It's likely that your class will have exams that require proctoring. University Center's Testing Center can be that proctor for you. Be sure to obtain the proctor form from your professor, complete it, and then provide it to the UC Testing Center. You may also call the testing center with further questions at 605-367-5989.
Technology Requirements and Support
At University Center, we are committed to supporting your technology needs and questions. See our Technology Support for more information. Additionally, as anew or returning student/faculty, you may wish to review tutorials online at each campus on how to make the most of D2L; see the following:
