Helping Students Help Themselves
Your success as a student is important to everyone at University Center. At this time, tutoring is available for Writing, Math, Accounting, and Research Librarians. If you are in a class that requires essays etc., be sure to utilize the Writing tutors, they can help you even if you are not in an "ENGL" course. If there is subject material we don't currently have a tutor for, we encourage you check out tutoring options below. For resources that allow you to learn at your own pace, visit Academic Resources. University Center's Tutor Schedule details are below.
Planning to participate?
Before arriving at tutoring, it helps if you complete, or attempt to complete, all reading and assigned homework. If it’s too difficult, try anyway. This will allow you to show your tutor what you are struggling with specifically. Attempting to complete the assigned work beforehand will also save time during your session.
Below is a quick checklist that will help you remember what to bring to your tutoring session.
- Bring all necessary materials (pencils, paper, calculator, etc.).
- Bring textbooks, tests and notes from the class.
- Bring the homework you’ve been attempting to complete.
- Prepare and bring any specific questions you may have about the material.
- Bring an open and positive attitude to make the most of the session.
The tutor’s role is not to do the work for you, but to coach you to do it yourself. Be active in the tutoring session by listening intently, asking questions and working through the problems.
Do you need additional academic support? Each main campus provides different distance support options. For example, USD provides online tutoring via Smart Thinking (information listed below).
Online Tutoring: USD offers support for all USD students through a partnership with the online provider "Smarthinking." Students can connect on-demand with an expert tutor for a drop-in session 24 hours a day, schedule an appoint in advance, submit writing for detailed review or ask a question offline and get a response within 24 hours. There are over 150 topics covered, including math, science, nursing, accounting, economics, Spanish, anatomy/physiology, reading and writing. Full list is available on the Smarthinking website.
To access Smarthinking, go to the main portal page and click the red “Smarthinking Tutoring” button on the “Quick Links” screen. You can also log into any D2L class you have -- it does not have to be the class you want tutored. You can then log into the tutoring system from the help dropdown menu on any D2L navigation bar.
