Find Your Way With ACCUPLACER

The Accuplacer is a computer-based placement test designed to assess individual skill levels in Reading, English, and Math. The results of the Accuplacer are used by academic advisors to place students in the college courses matching their skill level, goals, and academic background.

Who Takes the Accuplacer

Students entering into any SD BOR institution or high school students seeking dual credit without valid placement scores must take the Accuplacer. A valid placement score is an ACT or Accuplacer score received within the SD BOR guidelines within the last five years. Some SD BOR schools or departments may require additional placement tests or requirements; please discuss this possibility with your advisor.

 

Cost of Accuplacer

The cost for the Accuplacer is $17.05 (NOTE: starting 7/1/16, the fee is $18.00) for students challenging an ACT or Accuplacer score taken within the last five years or $25.00 if the student is not taking the exam for admission into a Non-SD BOR school. Students may challenge a previous ACT or Accuplacer score only once.

Study materials, and more, are available at Collegeboard Accuplacer. A calculator is provided within the testing software.

 

Scores

Results are available immediately after completing the test; students will receive a copy of their score report. Non-SD BOR students who need their results mailed to their institution must complete the UC Permission to Release Placement Score Form.

 

Schedule an Accuplacer

There isn’t a time limit for the Accuplacer. Most students take 30-45 minutes per section; the number and difficulty of questions vary and are based on the responses to previous questions. Students may request an appointment to take the Accuplacer during normal operating hours. We do not administer Accuplacer tests during midterms or finals week (see Academic Calendar).
