What To Do in an Emergency
University Center is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our students, faculty, staff and visitors. Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to review UC's emergency procedures, weather closing policy and security information. This information has been complied to ensure the continued safety of all those who study, work and visit University Center.
UC has developed several procedures to ensure the continued safety of all those who student, work and visit University Center. Thoroughly reviewing this information could prove invaluable should an emergency situation ever occur.
Armed Intruder/Hostage/Lockdown
Secure your area.
Advise everyone to stay calm and follow protocol.
Lock down doors/windows/gates.
Classroom teachers – Lock classroom door(s) from the inside via the deadbolt, shut lights off and get under desks/tables.
Offices – Lock doors, shut lights off, get under your desk and wait for police or appropriate security personnel.
Other applicable spaces – Lock doors, shut lights off, get under desks and wait for police or appropriate security personnel.
Once room is secured, use a cell phone or room phone to dial 911. Remain in the room at all times. At no point should you open the doors to let anyone in.
Tornado/Hazardous Weather
If notification of hazardous weather is given, advise students and staff to stay calm.
Check room maps located in rooms for designated tornado/safe area shelter.
In an orderly fashion, direct students and staff to those locations.
In the event you cannot reach designated shelter, take cover under desks, tables, etc.
Stay in shelter areas until an announcement is made that the inclement weather has passed.
Medical Emergency
Attend to injured person/persons.
Appoint someone to dial 911.
Appoint someone to let front office know of the emergency.
Stay with injured person(s) until medical help arrives.
Fire/Explosion
Stay calm.
Advise students/staff to the nearest exit. When exiting, walk calmly and be considerate.
When you are safely outside call 911.
Do not re-enter building until given the all clear from appropriate personnel.
