If you are transferring to a South Dakota University, you can use an equivalency calculator by clicking on the school logo(s) above. These calculators are hosted by the respective institution, and can help you determine which courses will transfer from a previously attended college or university; additionally, you can use these equivalency calculators to determine whether the courses you are currently taking, or plan to take, will transfer to the institution, what credit you will receive upon transferring, and the amount of credit that may be allowed.

The transfer equivalency information is dynamic and can be updated on a daily basis. The colleges and universities listed are those for which each school has established an equivalency table. As more equivalents are established, these tables will be updated. These lists are intended to be used as a guideline and do not guarantee that a specific course will transfer. The transfer database is not considered an agreement or contract between individual students and their school. This information is provided for assistance with transfer planning and does not represent an official credit evaluation, which is only provided after a student applies for transfer and is admitted to the university of choice. The applicability of transfer courses to an individual student's program and degree requirements is determined when an admitted student meets with his/her academic advisor(s) (see the SDBOR Transfer of Credit Policy 2-5 for more on transfer policy).

 

Military Transfer Credits

If a student served in the U.S. Military and completed academic work during their time serving, some of that work may apply toward their degree completion. An Official Transcript of that work can be sent by the student requesting a transcript to be sent from the Joint Services Transcript system. Records should be sent directly to the SD University that the student is applying to so that work can be evaluated by that campus' Registrar. Technical Institutes

In South Dakota, there are four technical instutes: Lake Area Technical Institute, Mitchell Technical Institute, Southeast Technical Institute, and Western Dakota Technical Institute. If a student has completed a degree at one of these four institutions, he/she may have the opportunity to follow an Articulation Agreement; additionally, if a student has some completed courses after July, 1, 1999 these are the courses allowed to transfer in to our partner institutions (USD, SDSU, DSU, NSU, BHSU, and SDSM&T). Regionally Accredited Schools

The regional accrediting agencies were established in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in response to a perceived need for better articulation between secondary schools and higher education institutions, particularly to help colleges and universities evaluate student's courses. The SDBOR state universities are regionally accredited with the North Central Association (which was organized in 1895). Regionally accredited higher education institutions are predominantly academically oriented, non-profit institutions. Only those courses completed at institutions accredited by one of the regional accrediting agencies will be considered for transfer. However, regional accreditation does not automatically result in transferrability of course work. If a course is not transferred as desired, each school has a process in place for students to ask for credit to be considered. Students work with their academic advisors to ask for a desired equivalency. Non-Regionally Accredited Schools

If a student has attended a school that was only nationally accredited and not regionally accredited, it may be difficult (if not impossible) to transfer credits (or even credit for a degree earned) if he or she then applies to a regionally accredited college.

 

Credit by Exam or Life Experience

In order to earn academic credit by examination, especially in cases in which a student has attended a non-regionally accredited institution, it is recommended that a student consider the process of earning credit via Credit through Validation/Exam: CLEP testing, Advanced Placement (AP) or DSST testing. Credit earned through life experience or departmental testing is possible for certain majors through certain schools–it is recommended that a student work with their Academic Advisor to determine the process and verify whether this means of earning credit will work.
