Gain Credit Through CLEP

The College Board’s College Level Examination Program (CLEP) provides students with an opportunity to “test-out” of specific Freshman/Sophomore level college courses. Students receiving a passing score on their CLEP test will earn college credit without having to attend the class and will save money on tuition. The cost to register for a CLEP test is $80 (payable online through your CLEP account). Visit the CLEP website for available CLEP tests, practice exams, and study guides.

 

Getting Started

Step 1: Meet with your advisor before registering for a CLEP Test

Some majors/programs do not allow CLEP testing for certain classes/requirements. Meet with your academic/faculty advisor before planning/scheduling a test as this type of information varies (see SDBOR CLEP Guidelines or your school's guidelines: SDSU, DSU, USD).

 

Step 2: Create an account to register and pay for the CLEP test.

By creating an account, you will have access to your scores and be able to send them to colleges. This is also where you will register and pay for your test.

 

Step 3: Print your CLEP Registration Ticket

After registering and paying for your test, a registration ticket will be produced. Please print this registration ticket and bring with you the day of your exam. You may also download the ticket to your computer, save, and upload to our online registration request if you plan to register by clicking on the button below.

 

Step 4: Request an appointment at the University Center

CLEP tests are administered ONLY at certain times, see the Testing Center Schedule. All CLEP tests have a 90 minute time limit except for the College Composition test, which is 2 hours. We do not administer the CLEP test during midterms and finals week (see Academic Calendar).

 

Step 5: Take the Test

Please bring the following items with you on the day of your test:

• the CLEP Registration Ticket,
• headphones if taking a foreign language test,
• a valid, government issued photo-ID (i.e. Driver’s License, Passport, State ID, Tribal ID, and Military ID), and
• $15 for the University Center Proctor fee ($25 if taking for a Non-SD BOR university; Military test for free):
  • SDSU students will need to pay an additional $7.50 per credit and complete an Application for Placement Credit form for each CLEP test successfully completed. Please bring a blank check to pay for the credits in case you receive a passing score.

Once the UC proctor has verified your test and identity, you will provided with a quiet location and computer to take your test. Calculators are not allowed.

 

Step 6: Review Your Scores

Your score will be available immediately after your test unless you are taking the College Composition w/Essay exam. Since the essay portion needs to be graded, the scores will be mailed to you within 6 weeks of taking the exam, so please plan accordingly if you are attempting to earn the credit as a pre-requisite.

 

Step 7: Add Scores to Official Transcript

Once your scores are received by the score recipient listed on your registration ticket, please allow 2-3 weeks for the credit to be added to your transcript. If you wish your score report to be sent to another univeristy, please complete the CLEP Transcript Request form and mail/fax to the information provided at the bottom of the form. The Univeristy Center does not forward scores to other institutions.
